Replacement Goat Milk In A Pinch
🍼 Bottle Baby Goat Formula Recipe (Tried & True!)
This is the homemade formula recipe I’ve always used for bottle baby goats, and it has never caused any tummy issues in my experience. Of course, mama’s milk is always best—especially for that vital colostrum in the first 24 hours—but sometimes bottle feeding becomes necessary:
The baby is too weak to nurse
The mother rejects the baby
Or you’re supplementing with a large litter
This formula is a great alternative and can be more affordable than powdered replacers from feed stores, depending on your local prices. 🧴 Supplies You'll Need
16 oz soda bottle (regular plastic bottles work great)
Screw-on nipple (available at Tractor Supply or most feed stores)
Clean hands, clean bottles, and a warm spot for feeding
🥛 Bottle Baby Goat Formula Recipe
Ingredients:
1 gallon whole milk (homogenized, from the grocery store)
1 can evaporated milk
1 cup buttermilk
Instructions:
Pour out about ⅓ of the gallon of milk and set it aside.
Add the evaporated milk and buttermilk to the jug.
Top it off with the reserved whole milk until the jug is full again.
Mix gently each time before pouring a bottle.
🐐 Feeding Tips from Experience
Palpate the baby’s tummy during feeding! If it feels tight, they've had enough—even if they scream like they haven’t. Goats are very convincing.
Always make sure milk is warm (not hot!)
Keep feedings small and frequent, especially in the first few days
