Kalmbach Henhouse Reserve Feed Review

🐔 My Honest Thoughts on Kalmbach Henhouse Reserve

I decided to try the Kalmbach Henhouse Reserve poultry feed for my laying hens after seeing so many glowing reviews—and let me tell you, my girls were not disappointed!

As soon as I opened the bag, I was impressed. It’s not your typical bland pellet feed—you can actually see the seeds and grains mixed in. It looks like real food, and apparently, it tastes like it too (according to my chickens). They went absolutely wild over it.

When I ran out before the next shipment came, I had to grab a standard pelleted feed in the meantime. The look they gave me when I poured that in their feeder—pure betrayal. You’d think I downgraded them to fast food from five-star dining. 😂

🥚 Did It Help with Egg Production?

I do think I noticed an uptick in egg production, just like others have reported. It wasn’t dramatic, but enough to make me feel like the better nutrition made a difference.

⚠️ Downsides Worth Mentioning

There were two main drawbacks for me:

  1. Availability – No local feed stores carry it where I live, so I had to order it online. I ended up setting up an autoship through Chewy, but their shipping was hit or miss. Sometimes it arrived early, sometimes late.

  2. Waste – While my girls loved it, they tended to pick through and leave behind certain grains and seeds. That added up over time, and with the cost, it wasn’t ideal. If I had a more efficient feeder setup that reduced waste, I might give it another shot.

  3. 🐓 Final Thoughts

I’m still a fan of Kalmbach overall. They use quality ingredients, and I’ve had good results with their mini pig feed and chick crumbles too.

I might circle back to this feed if I can figure out a better setup to minimize waste, or if I find a local store that carries it regularly.
