🐄 When Your New Heifer Gives You the Middle Finger (and Jumps a Fence)
What. A. Week.
There’s never a dull moment on the farm, and chaos always seems to be lurking right around the corner.
We recently added a new heifer to our foundation herd—a beautiful 7-month-old Highpark. But if she could have given me the middle finger, I’m pretty sure she would have. I knew she wouldn’t be as friendly as the rest of our crew, but wow—she wanted absolutely nothing to do with me. 😅
🤦 Rookie Mistake, Right Out the Gate
The plan was simple:
Get her height
Hit her with some fly spray
Turn her out to meet the herd
I was so, so wrong.
Coming from a horse background, I know cows are a different ball game, but I wasn’t thinking. Instead of putting her in a pen to let her settle in and adjust, I went ahead and turned her loose with the rest of the herd.
🏃♀️ The Great Escape
And just like that—
She slipped right through the fence with the grace of a deer… and the speed to match.
With a few dramatic fake charges to remind me who was boss, she then hightails it through the next fence at my neighbors like it was nothing.
At that point, I called it a day.
No sense stressing her—or myself—any more than we already were.
🐎 Not My Rodeo (Literally)
I’m no roper.
And I’m pretty sure my 3-year-old mare isn’t up for the job either. So I’m enlisting the help of someone a little more seasoned at catching cattle in Oklahoma-sized pastures.
Honestly, I have to say—the people out here in Oklahoma are amazing.
Everyone’s quick to lend a hand and totally understanding when things go sideways. I’m super thankful for our neighbors and this little community that always shows up when it matters.
Here’s hoping tomorrow is less chaotic…
But who am I kidding? 😂
